What is Dental Anxiety?

Dental anxiety is a fear of going to the dentist. It can be the result of a phobia, or it can stem from a negative experience that a person had during a previous appointment, even back in childhood. Studies estimate that more than one-third of people in the United States have dental anxiety. For a significant portion of them, the level of anxiety is so high that people put off going to the dentist, even if they seriously need care.

If you suspect you may have dental anxiety, know that you are not alone. Drs. Gordon and Brooks Green and Dr. Nichole Barnett have the solution to help you overcome your fears while receiving the care that your smile needs.

What sedation options are available to me?

Oral Sedation

We offer oral sedation at our dental clinic to help ease any dental anxiety or worry you have. This pill form of sedation is a popular option for patients who want a stress-free dental experience.

Whether you have a low pain threshold, struggle with anxiety disorders or are coming in for a complex procedure, you can get in touch with our team and we can answer any questions you have about oral sedation or any of our other dental anxiety solutions.

Nitrous Oxide

Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is a conscious sedation method that is commonly administered for dental treatments. Inhaled through a small mask, the effects kick in fast. You will be awake for the duration of your dental treatment, but it will be an easier experience for you.  It will help with calmness and patients sometimes feel light and dazed during the process. This is popular for those with a fear of the dentist, mild anxiety concerns around receiving dental treatments, and for children. The effects of this can wear off within minutes, so it is an easy short-term solution for those who need to drive themselves home.
